Earns the Jane Hickman Teaching Award
The Jane Hickman Teaching Award is
historically the highest recognition of excellence in medical student teaching
at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine.
Jane Hickman, MD, BS Med 1928, maintained
an independent spirit throughout her career as an anesthesiologist and in her
second love, showing Morgan horses. Born in 1904 in Kirkwood, Mo., Hickman came
to Columbia, Mo., to complete high school, her undergraduate degree and the
two-year medical school program at MU. She went on to finish her medical degree
in 1931 at Rush Medical School in Chicago. After practicing anesthesiology in
Shreveport, La., Hickman moved to Peoria, Ill., in 1958 and joined Associated
Anesthesiologists, a four-physician group at the time. For the next 12 years,
she worked long hours and spent what free time she had showing horses. In 1970,
she moved to Austin, Texas, to retire closer to family. Hickman died in 1986,
leaving much of her estate to benefit her two passions —medicine and horses.
